Caring for Ourselves and the Earth
By Susan Hunt-Bradford
April has always felt like a fresh start. After months of cold, gray days, the earth begins to wake up again. Trees bud, flowers push through the soil, and there’s a quiet sense that something new is possible. It’s no coincidence that this is also the time we celebrate Earth Day—a reminder of the connection we share with the world around us.
The past few years have been a lot for all of us. Life has felt uncertain at times, and many of us have had to navigate challenges we never expected. In the midst of it all, it’s easy to lose touch with what really matters. We get caught up in responsibilities, stress, and the constant noise of everyday life.
But just like the earth, we have the ability to renew ourselves.
Earth Day is often thought of as a time to focus on big environmental issues, but it can also be something much more personal. Caring for the planet doesn’t always start with large, sweeping changes. Sometimes it begins with small, intentional choices—slowing down, spending time outside, preparing nourishing meals, or simply taking a moment to breathe and reconnect.
When we take care of ourselves, we naturally begin to care more deeply for the world around us. We become more mindful of what we consume, how we live, and how our choices impact others. Our health and the health of the planet are more connected than we often realize.
This month, as our community gathers once again for events like the St. Louis Earth Day Festival, we are reminded that we are not alone in this journey. There is something powerful about coming together—sharing ideas, supporting local businesses, and reconnecting with a sense of community.
Renewal doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as stepping outside and feeling the sun on your face, planting something in the ground, or choosing one small habit that supports your well-being. These small actions, over time, create meaningful change.
This April, let it be a season of renewal—not just for the earth, but for yourself. Take time to reconnect with what brings you joy, what nourishes your body, and what grounds you in a sense of peace. When we care for ourselves, we become better stewards of the world around us.
And that is where real change begins.
